Week 4 Start/Sit For Fantasy Football

Hopefully Thursday night was a success for everyone, from a fantasy perspective. Below is a reminder of how this article will be laid out, followed by the rest of my Week 4 start/sit.

Must Start: These are players that you’re starting week-to-week, regardless of the opponent.

Flex Start: These are players who are more opponent dependent or players you might need to start depending on league size. This is also a spot where some of the stars have tougher matchups, but you are still starting them.

Sits: These are players that don’t have a good matchup or don’t have much of a role in their team’s offense.

***Please note that this article was written before the Sunday and Monday night game and with that comes changes to player situations due to injury or other factors. If a player(s) is injured or inactive after this article was published please use common sense and sit them. Please always double-check your lineup before kickoff.***

In order for me to be able to cover every team’s matchup, the explanations will be brief. I do base these recommendations on my fantasy football experience along with the necessary research. This is my first year doing this weekly article and last week, I made approximately 200 decisions (start/sit) and got 140 correct and 67 incorrect for a 68% correct rate. My average so far this season is 67% correct. Please note, I didn’t do week 1 rankings. Let’s dive into the rest of week 4.

Bye Week: New York Jets & San Francisco 49ers

Titans @ Falcons

Tennessee Titans:

Must Start: N/A

Flex Start: Derrick Henry (RB) Delanie Walker (TE) Adam Humphries (WR)

Mariota hasn’t looked good this season, I expect the offense to go through the run game. Walker is the team leader in targets and someone that should see plenty more targets here.

Sit: Marcus Mariota (QB) Corey Davis (WR) A.J. Brown (WR)

I don’t have lots of confidence in this passing attack to make any of these wide receivers usable.

Atlanta Falcons:

Must Start: Matt Ryan (QB) Julio Jones (WR)

Matt Ryan plays much better at home and Gardner Minshew had a solid game, last week, against this defense.

Flex Start: Devonta Freeman (RB) Calvin Ridley (WR) Austin Hooper (TE)

This is assuming Ito Smith is ruled out, if Smith plays, i’d sit Freeman. Hooper has seen 22 targets through three games.

Sit: Mohamed Sanu (WR)

Redskins @ Giants

Washington Redskins:

Must Start: N/A

Flex Start: Case Keenum (QB) Chris Thompson (RB) Terry McLaurin (WR) Vernon Davis (TE)

The Redskins should play Thompson more. Terry has scored a touchdown in his first three games and has seen 24 targets. Mike Evans had a great game, last week, against this defense. With Reed is out, Davis should see plenty of snaps.

Sit: Adrian Peterson (RB) Paul Richardson (WR) Trey Quinn (WR)

New York Giants:

Must Start: Evan Engram (TE)

He saw 8 targets, last week, which was second on the team.

Flex Start: Daniel Jones (QB) Wayne Gallman (RB) Sterling Shepard (WR)

Mitchell Trubisky had a nice fantasy day against this defense. Gallman should see plenty of work due to lack of depth at running back. Shepard has really developed a connection with Jones as he saw a team leading 9 targets, a week ago.

Sit: All other wide receivers

Waiting to see if anyone else separates themselves before Golden Tate gets back.

Chargers @ Dolphins

Los Angeles Chargers:

Must Start: All Chargers

Flex Start: N/A

Sit: N/A

Miami Dolphins:

Must Start: N/A

Flex Start: N/A

Sit: All Dolphins

Raiders @ Colts

Oakland Raiders:

Must Start: Darren Waller (TE)

He’s Carr’s top targeted player with 29 targets through three weeks. If Darius Leonard is out that’s another reason to fire up Waller.

Flex Start: Josh Jacobs (RB) Tyrell Williams (WR)

The Colts have allowed 5.5 yards per rush, which should help Jacobs get back on track. Williams continues to be the go to wide receiver for Carr.

Sit: Derek Carr (QB)

Indianapolis Colts:

Must Start: N/A

Flex Start: Jacoby Brissett (QB) Marlon Mack (RB) Parris Campbell (WR)

Mack is the clear workhorse back and the Raiders have allowed 5.4 yards per rush. Campbell should be the number 1 target if Hilton is out.

Sit: T.Y. Hilton (WR) Jack Doyle (TE) Eric Ebron (TE)

If Hilton plays then he’d be a flex start. Both tight ends usually cancel each other out weekly.

Panthers @ Texans

Carolina Panthers:

Must Start: Christian McCaffrey (RB) Greg Olsen (TE)

Olsen saw 7 targets last week and 25 through 3 weeks.

Flex Start: Kyle Allen (QB) D.J. Moore (WR) Curtis Samuel (WR)

Lets see if Allen can build on last weeks performance. Moore is a solid play this week and curious to see if the connection between Allen and Moore continues to develop.

Sit: N/A

Houston Texans:

Must Start: N/A

Flex Start: Deshaun Watson (QB) Carlos Hyde (RB) DeAndre Hopkins (WR)

Watson is getting sacked too much, to start the season. Hopkins should go against Panthers cornerback James Bradberry.

Sit: Duke Johnson (RB) Will Fuller (WR) Kenny Stills (WR) Tight Ends

He’s taken a backseat to Hyde.

Chiefs @ Lions

Kansas City Chiefs:

Must Start: Patrick Mahomes (QB) Travis Kelce (TE)

Flex Start: LeSean McCoy (RB) Darrel Williams (RB) All Wide Receivers

Start your Chiefs in this high powered offense.

Sit: Damien Williams (RB)

Assuming he’s out this week due to a knee injury.

Detroit Lions:

Must Start: N/A

Flex Start: Matthew Stafford (QB) Kerryon Johnson (RB) Kenny Golladay (WR) Marvin Jones (WR) T.J. Hockenson (TE)

This secondary is very vulnerable which should help Stafford and his pass catchers. Mark Ingram just had 3 touchdowns against this defense, what can Johnson do with his opportunity?

Sit: Danny Amendola (WR)

Browns @ Ravens

Embed from Getty Images

Cleveland Browns:

Must Start: N/A

Flex Start: Nick Chubb (RB) Odell Beckham Jr (WR) Jarvis Landry (WR)

This Browns offense needs to turn things around quickly and until they do that is why these guys are all in the flex start spot. Landy keeps seeing enough targets, 9 last week, to keep him in the flex start category.

Sit: Baker Mayfield (QB) Demetrius Harris (TE)

Baltimore Ravens:

Must Start: Lamar Jackson (QB)

Even though he’s inaccurate as a passer, his rushing ability keeps him here.

Flex Start: Mark Ingram (RB) Marquise Brown (WR) Mark Andrews (TE)

The Browns defense is banged up and should benefit all of these players, in week 4. Brown and Andrews are Jackson’s top targeted pass catchers, through 3 weeks.

Sit: Miles Boykin (WR) Willie Snead (WR)

Patriots @ Bills

Embed from Getty Images

New England Patriots:

Must Start: N/A

Flex Start: Tom Brady (QB) Julian Edelman (WR) Phillip Dorsett (WR)

Brady has struggled in Buffalo, but is still someone i’d be starting. With Tre’Davious White on Gordon, these two guys should benefit.

Sit: Sony Michel (RB) James White (RB) Rex Burkhead (RB) Josh Gordon (WR) Tight Ends

Michel a touchdown dependent running back right now and all three will be available to split the workload.

Buffalo Bills:

Must Start: N/A

Flex Start: John Brown (WR)

He should see Stephon Gilmore, so i’d rather sit him if I can.

Sit: Josh Allen (QB) Frank Gore (RB) Zay Jones (WR) Cole Beasley (WR) Dawson Knox (TE)

The Patriots have a solid defense and are usually able to confuse young quarterbacks which should affect all of these players production.

Buccaneers @ Rams

Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

Must Start: N/A

Flex Start: Peyton Barber (RB) Ronald Jones (RB) Mike Evans (WR) Chris Godwin (WR) O.J. Howard (TE)

Between Barber and Jones, not sure who will have the better day. You’re starting Evans and Godwin, but just know that this Rams defense has held other top wide receiver duos in check. Beckham and Landry had a total of 118 receiving yards last week.

Sit: Jameis Winston (QB)

The Rams defense has held opposing quarterbacks in check. Winston has struggled against tougher defenses this season.

Los Angeles Rams:

Must Start: N/A

Flex Start: Jared Goff (QB) Todd Gurley (RB) Robert Woods (WR) Brandin Cooks (WR) Cooper Kupp (WR)

Daniel Jones had a nice day against this defense last week. This Rams offense should get back on track here, but they aren’t as potent as in the last few years.

Sit: Gerald Everett (TE)

Seahawks @ Cardinals

Embed from Getty Images

Seattle Seahawks:

Must Start: Russell Wilson (QB) Tyler Lockett (WR)

Teams have had their way with the Cardinals defense, which is good news for Wilson and Lockett.

Flex Start: Chris Carson (RB) D.K. Metcalf (WR) Will Dissly (TE)

CMC just went off against this defense, this could be a get right game for Carson. Dissly is now on the tight end 1/2 spectrum.

Sit: N/A

Arizona Cardinals:

Must Start: Larry Fitzgerald (WR)

He continues to be Murray’s go to player with 31 targets so far this season.

Flex Start: Kyler Murray (QB) David Johnson (RB)

Kyler’s rushing ability keeps him relevant, while he’s developing as a passer. Alvin Kamara just went off against the Seahawks defense, last week.

Sit: Tight Ends

Vikings @ Bears

Embed from Getty Images

Minnesota Vikings:

Must Start: Dalvin Cook (RB)

He’s the second best running back in the NFL, so far, only behind CMC. He’s getting plenty of volume each week.

Flex Start: Stefon Diggs (WR) Adam Thielen (WR)

This offense continues to be a run first offense, so i’d rather sit these guys if possible. Playing the Bears defense doesn’t help things either.

Sit: Kirk Cousins (QB) Kyle Rudolph (TE)

Chicago Bears:

Must Start: N/A

Flex Start: David Montgomery (RB) Allen Robinson (WR)

The Vikings have a good defense, but both of these players are seeing plenty of volume each week and are the top options at their positions.

Sit: Mitchell Trubisky (QB) Tarik Cohen (RB) Taylor Gabriel (WR) Trey Burton (TE)

Trubisky needs to improve as a passer in order to make him and the rest of these players weekly starters.

Jaguars @ Broncos

Embed from Getty Images

Jacksonville Jaguars:

Must Start: N/A

Flex Start: Gardner Minshew (QB) Leonard Fournette (RB) D.J. Chark (WR)

The Broncos defense has under-performed so far this season and teams have been able to have success against them so I like these guys to be useful this week. Derek Carr, Josh Jacobs and Tyrell Williams had a solid week 1.

Sit: Chris Conley (WR) Dede Westbrook (WR) Tight Ends.

Denver Broncos:

Must Start: N/A

Flex Start: Phillip Lindsay (RB) Royce Freeman (RB) Emmanuel Sanders (WR) Noah Fant (TE)

The Jags defense should cause a lot of check downs to these backs. I’d rather sit all of these guys if I could. Delanie Walker has a solid week, last week, against the this defense.

Sit: Joe Flacco (QB) All other wide receivers

I see Joe turning it over a couple of times against this defense.

Cowboys @ Saints

Embed from Getty Images

Dallas Cowboys:

Must Start: Dak Prescott(QB) Ezekiel Elliott (RB) Amari Cooper (WR)

The Saints rank in the bottom five defensively when it comes to yards allowed per game at 436.

Flex Start: Randall Cobb (WR) Jason Witten (TE)

Will Dissly had a solid game, a week ago, against this defense.

Sit: N/A

New Orleans Saints:

Must Start: Alvin Kamara (RB) Michael Thomas (WR)

These are weekly starters.

Flex Start: Teddy Bridgewater (QB)

The Dallas Cowboys are a top 15 defense on the season, but playing Miami sure helps that ranking. I think Teddy will be more aggressive as a passer this week.

Sit: Ted Ginn (WR) Jared Cook (TE)

Cook has only seen 12 targets through three weeks.

Bengals @ Steelers (Monday Night)

Embed from Getty Images

Cincinnati Bengals:

Must Start: N/A

Flex Start: Andy Dalton (QB) Joe Mixon (RB) Tyler Boyd (WR)

The Steelers haven’t been good defensively so this mean good things for these players this week. These players should rebound nicely here.

Sit: John Ross (WR) Tyler Eifert (TE)

Eifert has only seen 11 targets through three weeks, not enough volume to be started.

Pittsburgh Steelers:

Must Start: James Conner (RB)

The Bengals defense has been gashed with the run, so if Conner can’t turn it around here, then we can panic on his rest of season outlook.

Flex Start: Mason Rudolph (QB) Juju Smith-Schuster (WR)

I’d prefer to sit Rudolph if I can. I do think this offense will do what they can to get Juju involved early and often.

Sit: Tight Ends

Good luck in week 3 and remember don’t overthink your lineup decisions this week.
